This book and a companion student version offer several helpful suggestions for thinking about and preventing plagiarism in classrooms and schools I will use the student version again next year. A pretty good guide for students and it offers some great discussion points to use in the classroom. This is a great resource for middle and high school teachers and librarians It is also an enjoyable read I had no problem reading it quickly cover to cover. Read for a book discussion in my school district Gil is a thoughtful, reflective teacher and he writes compassionately about why students plagiarize, why some teachers unknowingly set kids up to cheat, and how to create interesting assignments that are cheat proof I was interested in the reasons kids cheat laziness, stress over deadlines, confusions I like his response to plagiarism in his class he has students fill out a form talking about why they did what they did, and how I loved the assignment where he asks kids to use the internet to find or cut and paste a research paper from a generic assignmentthe most important thing he does is makes kids thinkthink about what they did and what they learned. He talks about metacognitive assignments asking the kids to write about what they learned He believes that will remind students of the value of learning over the value of just getting the grade Heavy on Alfie Kohn, so I m not surprised he comes down against rubrics to grade, but since he s a practicing teacher, I know he understands the struggles that teachers and students face.I found some great ideas to implement in my classroom next year Some worthwhile ideas about plagiarism, but also about how to teach writing and research Definitely worth the time.
