The author mixes history and fiction to create a compelling story of Christianity s journey from persecuted martyrdom to the dominant religious faith of the Roman Empire Drawing from the rich tapestry of the age of martyrs during the reign of the Roman Emperor Diocletian, Gordon sets the stage for an enthralling story It is the story of the epic forces at play during this turbulent time and the lives forever changed by its events. One of the exciting elements, for those of us who enjoy history, is that the author does not shy away from sharing historical details which serve as the backdrop for his fictional characters But, for those who fear getting mired in the quagmire of historical minutia the author draws the reader back rapidly to the story line which runs throughout the book The neat thing is that the author s careful blend of history and facts will allow even the uninitiated to continue to be engaged while learning important information about this pivotal moment in the history of Christianity.Told through the eyes of three characters, the story does not bog down It continues to unfold until the very last page, captivating the reader and keeping him engaged as the events transpiring on the page Each character, in their own way, is larger than life and yet very real for the time portrayed in the book The author keeps the events and the protagonist believable as they make their way into history. The author has done an excellent job of keeping the story real and alive I commend this book to anyone looking for a good read Not only, will you enjoy the book, but you will learn a lot It is not often you get to do both at the same time This is a treat.

Amazing Book There is so much to it Eye opening history, gut wrenching drama, great examples of faith The stories of the persecution of Christians gave me tremendous perspective of the sacrifices that have been made and a greater appreciation of my faith This is not done in a mundane cold way but rather the author somehow brings history to life in a story that ends up being a page turning book that you can not let down The book is very graphic and contains quite a bit of violence but this is necessary for historical accuracy and to understand to amazing courage faith of the Martyrs This book makes an impact on you, it is simply a must read The end of the book contains a bonus beginning chapter of C Douglas Gordon s next novel Let me say, he has me hooked and anxiously awaiting it s release.

This is a sprawling tale, and kept my attention from the very start It truly reminds believers what persecution for the faith was like, and how much determination the early Christians had I thought it was amazing It s fiction, but the main characters engage with actual historical figures and events, so it has a really authentic feel It begins in the late 2nd century A.D., and begins in Syria The author did tons of research, and opens the book with some good background to give context to the story The cruelty and religious persecution seem like current issues, but they re as old as time I loved how much Miriam loved her child, and my heart broke seeing the tragic turn their lives took This is a book that stays with you.
