There s an old adage that Halloween allows you to be your true self for one night a year, and all of the other 364 days you re wearing society s costume This year Carly Beth decides to show who she is inside, or at least the person her tormenters have turned her into a monster It is this mask that calls out to her essence, and she craves to put her victim persona aside for once. The mask bonds with her skin, but is it really the mask or Carly Beth who won t let go of her new identity

11 If looks could kill Carly Beth has no idea what she wants to be for Halloween But she knows it needs to be really scary When she finds an old mask at a nearby party store she begs the man to let her buy the mask despite his reluctance Everything seems good and scary at first, but when Carly Beth starts getting strange thoughts while wearing the mask and even has trouble getting it off, things start to get really creepy I remember this one Still great

The Haunted Mask Goosebumps 11 , R.L StineFace to Face with a NightmareHow ugly is Carly Beth s Halloween mask It s so ugly that it almost scared her little brother to death So terrifying that even her friends are totally freaked out by it It s the best Halloween mask ever It s everything Carly Beth hoped it would be And Maybe too much Because Halloween is almost over And Carly Beth is still wearing that special mask 2007 1385 138 9789646807020 1386 1389 1390 1392 1397 20 1389 142 9786005915051 1391 1389 156 9786002962713 1390 1394 1395

Beware of masks This novel of the famous line of Goosebumps is the original book featuring the story of The Haunted Mask that several Youtube Top lists signaling as the best episode in the now classic TV series which adapted many of the books of the very first original line of Goosebumps. So, I thought that it can be a good idea to read itand in fact, it was indeed a good reading experience.Revenge is one of the easiest path to darkness, and Carly Beth found out in the harsh way when tired of being the target of scare pranks of her fellow school mates, she decided that in Halloween, she would be finally the one giving good scareshowever, the mask that she found for thatit s just too efective and she is beginning to lose herself into itand she won t imagine how awful will be the consequences of bringing that haunted mask into her own home.Entertaining and quick to read I enjoy it.

This reminds me of that episode of Buffy where a curse or a spell, or something, whatever it was turns everyone into whatever they re dressed as for Halloween Except not as funny Or as scary And without the benefit of Giles getting all unexpectedly hot at the end and laying the smackdown Mmm, Tony Headwhat was I saying Oh, right This is still pretty good, for what it is It s unsettling, the idea of putting something on for a while, only to realize too late that, not only can you not take it off, but it s actually become a part of you There s a metaphor there that I think is likely to be lost on the target audience, but I enjoyed as an adult reader What I really liked, though, was that, unlike on Buffy, where the trick or treaters of Sunnydale are changed because of the whims of The Bad Guy, Carly Beth is really the victim of her own inner demons If she hadn t been so intent on being something she wasn t, scary and mean, and getting revenge on Chuck and Steve, she never would have put on that mask And in the end, what saves her isn t just a symbol of love, but proof that she was loved for the way she was before.Yes, I analyze kids books Sue me.

Excellent This is frightening book and actually contained some pretty well written passages.Carly Beth love the double name Woot is a scaredy cat This wouldn t be so bad except for the fact that everyone her little brother, people at school, even her friends thinks it is really funny to scare her To make her jump and shriek and scream It s easy to do This leads to some pretty cruel practical jokes being played on Carly Beth worms in her sandwich, etc Like most times when I read about children and teens who are bullied, I feel a bit concerned for the bullies You do not know what you are messing with, I think It s all fun and games until someone gets hurt There s only so much a person can take before she eventually decides to start striking back. And so it goes with Carly Beth.Sick of being the butt of everyone s scare tactics, Carly Beth vows that this Halloween will be different Well, this year I won t be the one screaming, she thought This year, I ll be the one making everyone else scream Carly Beth goes out to buy the scariest mask she can find The man at the store warns her that she ll regret buying one of the scary masks he keeps in the hidden back room but Carly Beth won t be dissuaded The man reluctantly sells her the mask, and Carly Beth plans a fright night of epic revenge.First, her little brother Sneaking up on him to scare him, a masked Carly Beth is shocked at the deep, raspy voice that seems to emanate from her throat when she speaks She s not consciously trying to change her voice at all And the mask is hot And tight It closes down on her face like a second skin.Borrowing a bust of her head that her mom made in art class, Carly impales it on a broomstick and heads out into the night. Not only does she relish every scream and flinch inflicted by her scary face and rough growls, Carly Beth is seized by a strange mixture of anger and joy She delights in terrifying people, causing them pain, and dominating over those smaller and weaker than her And everyone is weaker than her, now.I thought this book was amazingly well done for the most part Watching the transformation of a shy, timid, easily startled 11 year old into a demon out for blood was fascinating and I thought pretty realistic You can easily see how a simple desire to get revenge on some boys from class turns into an ugly demonic transformation I like how slowly the mask tightens it grip on her, until she s unsure about where the mask ends and she begins.I didn t even feel as disapproving of Carly Beth and her behavior as I should have been Instead I gleefully watched as she became a little terror, stealing other children s candy and threatening to rip people s faces off It only became scary to me when she starts to realize that she can t get the mask off she might stay this way permanently.I thought the explanation was beyond ridiculous, but then again, this is R.L Stine, what do I expect LOL view spoiler Some kind of living masks that the man was keeping alive in his shop that once were beautiful and good, but got warped into being ugly and evil for no apparent reason Then they all start floating like balloons and chasing her down the street Ridiculous Only a symbol of love can get the mask off her She puts her mother s hollow plastic cast of her head over the mask and this succeeds in loosening it enough for her to get it off The end twist is that her brother puts the mask on at the end and we know it can never be taken off again hide spoiler
