I have been waiting for this book for some time as a fan of Morley Roberts and George Gissing. I have seventeen MR titles in my collection and this one came in the post yesterday. The paperback book has a nice pencil drawing of MR on the cover by his artist friend A. D. McCormick and the scholarly material is as good as it gets. There's a wonderfully informative introduction, and an author biography, chronology, and list of further reading and note on the text. The footnotes are copious and entirely relevant and at the back of the book are several appendices including contemporary book reviews,an author interview, description of a meeting with Robert Louis Stevenson at Apia, and the text of a lecture on "The Sea in Fiction" by Roberts himself from 1928. You really couldn't ask for more as an admirer of Roberts's fiction. I have already read several stories and can say that they are just what one would wish from am unfairly neglected writer. Well done to Victorian Secrets for this excellent edition and especial thanks to Markus Neacey for the incredible labour he must have put into selecting, transcribing the stories, and producing the scholarly apparatus.

I got this in the post yesterday and read it in two long sittings last night and today. I saw this on the Victorian Secrets website advertised as an e-book but I wanted the print edition which I pre-ordered as I had read The Western Avernus and had heard of Roberts as George Gissing's friend. Really nice book full of interesting stories though the sea stories were the best I think.

I have been reading this since yesterday. It was recommended to me as I like to delve into masculine literature now and then. And boy, what an enjoyable and unexpected pleasure it is. I was expecting something anti-feminist, the usual male perspective in the 1890s. But Roberts's stories are all about men and their strengths and weaknesses. And when women appear he is quite gentle and pleasant about them - puts them on a pedestal so to speak. I am half way through the book and so far it has been fun and I look forward to the rest.

(21st July) I have just finished the book. There are one or two stories that are rather slight but otherwise I found the others to be of a very high standard. My favourites were The Anticipator, The Crowd, and Jack-All-Alone. The Anticipator is the stand-out story here and ought to be one of the most quotable short stories in late-Victorian literature. Just look at these quotes:

"I catch the suggestion, the floating thistledown of thought."

"The story grows in the dark of the inner, perpetual, sleepless soul. It may be rejected by the artistic tribunal sitting there; it may be bidden to stand aside. I, the outer I, the husk-case of heredities, know nothing of it, but one day I take the pen and the hand writes it."

"Call stories chloral, morphia, bromides, if you will, but we give ease.”

"My dumb ancestors pipe oddly in me."

“My ego’s a bit fissured,” he said.

This is an excellent modern scholarly edition of the finest short stories by Morley Roberts - a neglected late-Victorian writer I had never heard of before until I saw the ebook advertised on Amazon. The writer is a real discovery and the stories are very readable and absorbing. The stories are very much of their time in the 1890s and early 1900s and similar in style to Robert Louis Stevenson, Wells, and Joseph Conrad. I especially liked the sea stories and some of the weird stories set in London clubland. And the appendix at the back of the book has some fascinating material relating to the author.

This was my first experience of reading an e-book on Kindle and it was fine navigating through the text. I have been reading one story per day for about a month now and have just finished the book. Really enjoyed the mixture of genres and it looks as if a lot of work has gone into producing the text. The introduction is first rate as you learn quite a lot about a writer frankly I had never heard of until I got this. The appendices add cream to the enjoyment. I am now going to order the print version as I prefer to have a copy on my travels.

I liked this collection of stories immensely. The selection is from Morley Roberts's entire career and quite varied. He was a writer who had real personality, led an adventurous life, and wrote some really ingenious stories.
