A lovely children s fiction book by Michael Morpurgo The book is about a donkey called Jo Jo who lives in Venice and works as a Melon donkey As he walks the streets of Venice everyone ridicules him even his own master His master decides to sell melons in St Mark s Square and Jo Jo is befriended by the princess of Venice One nisht as he plans to run away with the princess this sad little donkey finds himself in a situation that will change his life forever This book is a very good moral and uplifting story Although it lacks humour it makes up for this with the wonderful descriptions of Venice, characters and the atmosphere you can really imagine what it is like to be there with Jo Jo Within the book there are very nice coloured pictures to accompany the text The language within the book is catered for children of a good reading level, suggesting it is suited to KS2 Many activities can be created using this book such as researching Venice and discussing the morals within the story I enjoyed reading this book and highly recommend it.

What a delightful story It s along classic lines long suffering, gentle creature is finally loved for himself and so rises above his humble life and is set in Venice of some hundred years ago.I borrowed a copy from the library having seen it in the bookshop and read it to the grandchildren a couple of times in the first few days here After that I left it hanging around, but none of them asked me to read it again Perhaps I have too many exciting books Today I said that I wanted to read it to them one time as it has to go back to the library Zenobia wanted to listen, but James said he didn t he was busy reading another book However, before I d got halfway through, James had set his book aside and was intent on Jo jo By then Ivy had arrived as well, and the three of them were rapt in the great rescue of the people of Venice from the flood

The charming story of a down trodden donkey who carries melons to Venice His one wish is to be like the great golden horses in front of the palace of the Doge Legend says these magnificent statues will one day save the city.Jo Jo is befriended by the daughter of the Doge, much to the anger of her father When danger threatens, Jo Jo has two advantages he can hear the warning voices of the golden horses and he s got the loudest bray in all of Venice.

Very nice A satisfying story about the virtues of friendship, loyalty, and bravery, and about the limitations of judgments based on appearances Helen Stephens s illustrations remind me of so many of my favorite classic mid century illustrators Such a pleasure This is another that was a huge hit with Jack now 5 It s got a good bit of story perfect for 4 and up.
