Again, the mystery is a slow burn, but it s still an enjoyable book This one felt a little random for Sara to get involved, but once it happened, it was natural for her to be further and further involved Also, I loved having the occasional chapter from the arsonist s POV, as it was great to see his motivations how mentally disturbed he was.It was a little confusing having a Greg and a George as reoccurring characters, and there was once or twice I had to go back a few lines because I had mixed up the characters I do think the last few paragraphs were a good ending to the series, showing Sara s potential future paths while also letting the reader know she just wants to go back to living a normal life for now It kind of makes me wish there was a sequel series, for when she s a bit older and a detective That could be fun, and would help to get rid of some of the setbacks of this series she wouldn t have other constantly telling her to leave the cases alone, nor would she have others doubting her clues as much.Overall, while this series has some flaws which can be a little tiring by the end, it s still an enjoyable series, and Sara s deafness was handled well, both getting her into trouble and helping her to solve the cases The only book I don t own is the fifth one, and while I m not in a rush to buy it, I d buy it if I happened to see it when out and about. Reading this book was like saying goodbye to an old friend, which is what Sara was to me when I was a child This was also the only book I d not read previous and it was quite enjoyable There was very little character progression as they are already pretty well established, and the plot only serves to strengthen the bonds between the characters. Sara Howell Mysteries Hear No Evil series by Kate Chester1 Death in the afternoon2 Missing3 A time of fear4 Dead and buried5 Sudden death6 Playing with FireThis is a great series put out by scholastic that I got via inter library loan since my local library doesn t own it The books are similar to the Nancy Drew Series but with the added twist that the main character is post lingually deaf The mystery and action are great for a teen or tween but somewhat slowed down by the description of ASL The tediousness of trying to read the details of the signs as they are used may give the reader a better understanding of the deaf teen s frustration when she struggles to communicate with those that hear by reading their lips Many teens are interested in learning ASL and this gives a good introduction She is a strong independent character dealing with many issues any teen might face death of a family member, fights with her boyfriend, etc in addition to the frustration of the ESL language barrier that kids who speak two languages can relate to.The books are a bit dated because the increased use of computers and cell phones over the last 15 years has expanded the ways that the deaf and the hearing can communicate I don t think that makes the mysteries any less interesting though. I found it I finally found it I read this book in seventh grade, only I didn t remember what it was called or much about what it was about For the longest time I could only remember the arsonist in the book It wasn t until like 4 minutes ago that I remembered that the heroine was a deaf teenager and that is how I found this book on goodreads Now that the details are coming back to me, I am so excited to try to find it and read it again I remember it was so good so yeah, I d recommend it An excellent book that shows that just because you have a disability , it doesn t mean you can t stop your dreams from coming true A short, quick read that has suspense, drama, and action, all rolled into one.
